Fall is apple season and the perfect time to make applesauce! This was a new experience for many of the JK and SK children, and they worked together throughout the morning to peel, core, and chop the apples.
The children watched with surprise and delight as they turned the handle on the peeler and a long, thin strand of apple peel gradually stretched to the floor!
Coring and slicing the apples required the strength of both the children’s and the teachers’ hands.
Then it was time to cut the apple slices into small pieces. “This takes a long time!” and “This is hard work!” were frequent comments that were accompanied by smiles of satisfaction and accomplishment as the children placed a plate full of apple pieces into the large bowl.
Next, the children added apple cider and cinnamon, and the apples were finally ready to cook. By mid-afternoon, the aroma of cinnamon apples began to waft into the Tinker Lab. The children stood on a stool in the kitchen to enjoy the delicious smell and notice how the apple mixture had changed – “It’s beginning to look like applesauce!”
This time-lapse video captures the entire preparation process!
The next morning the JK and SK classes enjoyed the fruits of their labor for snack!
