When we were at Trio Park today, one of the SK friends noticed a huge insect sitting on a stone under a tree. As we looked more carefully, we determined that it was a dragonfly. The teachers encouraged the children to look quietly to avoid frightening it.
The children and teachers watched intently and noticed that the dragonfly was not moving. Ms. Harpole carefully picked up the stone so that the children could take a closer look.
The children noticed its large, transparent wings and the long point at the end of its body.
Since the dragonfly was still not moving, we thought that it was not alive and that we could take it back to school to study it with a magnifying glass. However, just as Ms. Harpole began to carry it toward the park entrance, it began to flutter its wings! It was alive!
We decided that we should return the dragonfly to where we found it so that it could fly back to its home when it was ready. Ms. Harpole slowly placed the stone on the ground and we then said “adiós” to the dragonfly.
As we left, the children wondered if the dragonfly would be waiting for us at the park tomorrow.
